When you have a voice as instantly recognisable as Miley Cyrus’s, not even a bad disguise or a stinky subway station could deter people from listening to you.

The singer pulled a massive crowd when she went undercover with late night host Jimmy Fallon as a random busker in the New York City underground.

Wearing a black wig, huge sunglasses and a cowboy hat, the 24-year-old belted out a pitch-perfect cover of her godmother Dolly Parton’s hit Jolene that literally stopped people in their tracks.

They quickly amassed a huge crowd of onlookers, some who were clearly not fooled by Cyrus’s less-than-elaborate disguise and others who were obliviously enjoying the show.

The jig was up, however, the minute Fallon – a star in his own right – whipped off his own hat and wig, sending the crowd into a frenzy, before introducing Cyrus, who then took off her own costume.

A dance party broke out as former Disney actress performed her 2009 single Party in the USA while her incredulous audience looked on, many capturing the moment on their phones.

Cyrus, who just released her sixth studio album, proved she has some serious pipes by drowning out the sound of passing trains, cheering fans and a three-piece band.

While Cyrus’s performance is particularly energetic, she’s not the first famous person to have some fun by going undercover.

Here’s five other stars who’ve dressed up to surprise the unsuspecting public.

Adele auditions to play herself

Wearing a prosthetic nose, Adele was surprisingly convincing as Jenny, a nanny auditioning for a role as an Adele impersonator. Needless to say, the minute she started singing the gig was hers.

U2 stuns in the subway

Jimmy Fallon’s first subway foray was with Irish rock band U2.

Looking like a bunch of misfits, they managed to pull a small crowd with a faux terrible performance, before whipping off their disguises to belt out Desire. Of course, then the people poured in.

Jewel does karaoke

Folk singer Jewel also donned prosthetics and a skirt suit to be Karen, a mild-mannered businesswoman nervous to do karaoke during after-work drinks.

The rowdy crowd was stunned into silence by her soulful, note-perfect rendition of Who Will Save Your Soul.

Michael Buble sells speakers

With an impressive South African accent and some serious hideous facial prosthetics, the Canadian crooner went undercover as a sales assistant peddling sound systems to British shoppers.

He even managed to get in some self-deprecating digs before he revealed his true identity by showing off his iconic voice.

Jessie J wows commuters

The British songstress, who coincidentally penned Cyrus’s Party in the USA, also performed in the NYC subway.

Given it was before she properly hit the big time, she didn’t need a disguise to lie low and passers-by were simply captivated by the girl from London with the huge voice.
