Triple J has released footage of the moment a small band from New South Wales found out they had topped the Hottest 100.

Beating out second-placed Kendrick Lamar, five piece alt-rock outfit The Rubens reacted by jumping up and down in the studio, ripping off their headphones and hugging each other.

“No way, no way!” they yelled, as the sounds of Lamar’s hit song ‘King Kunta’ played as number two over the radio.

The band had previously reached the number 10 spot in the 2012 countdown with its song ‘My Gun’, but were not a favourite to take out 2016’s indie music crown.

Not everyone was happy for The Rubens, however, with the Sydney Morning Herald criticising the “predictable” list of winners and others calling 2016’s Hottest 100 “safe”.

The band responded to the criticism, saying the crowd-sourced list wasn’t intended to shock and awe.

“It’s not meant to be surprising,” they told ABC News Breakfast.

But the band said people were bound to be surprised by the order of songs due to different tastes in music.

“I think we were surprised, but I guess I was really surprised at some of the results,” they said.

“I thought certain songs would have been much higher or lower. And that all comes down to personal taste.”

The band argued that compared with social media predictions, its song ‘Hoops’ had in fact provided an element of surprise to this year’s proceedings.
