Joy for Aussie breaking Lady Gaga’s record
A song recorded for $700 by a Melbourne singer who “no one knew about” has become the longest charting hit in ARIA history.
Over the weekend, Vance Joy’s Riptide broke Lady Gaga’s record of 106 weeks in a row with Poker Face on the Aria Top 100.
The charming ukelele tune has been on the chart for 107 consecutive weeks and also bumped Black Eyed Peas’ I Gotta Feeling into number three.

The pop-folk star (real name James Keogh) told news.com.au: “It’s so nice to think you have longevity in your music.
“One-hundred-and-seven weeks is a long time, not in the scheme of things but it is in the music industry. Things can come and go real quickly.
“You want your songs to last the test of time. No one knew about me before I put Riptide out so I have a lot to thank that song for.”
His tune has sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide with two million coming in America.
The song has been massive for him overseas – he’ll perform it on the American Idol grand final this week and last month he won the grand prize of the International Songwriting Competition with the first ever perfect score.
Next week he will join Taylor Swift to support her on the 1989 tour around the world.
The number’s endurance in Australia can also be attributed to its use in an insurance company’s advertising campaign for the past 18 months.
