The winners of the 2018 Oscars for lead actor and actress went to Gary Oldman and Frances McDormand.

Since the first Oscars ceremony in May 1929, there have been countless winners.

Ben-Hur, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King have won 11 Oscars. These are the most awards won by a single film.

But who has won the most Oscars?

Lead Actress

Katharine Hepburn won the most Oscars for Lead Actress.

Over her 60 year career, she won four awards for Morning Glory, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, The Lion in Winter and On Golden Pond.

She was nominated a further eight times for films including The Philadelphia Story and The African Queen.

Meryl Streep and Ingrid Bergman both come in second, at three awards each.

Lead Actor

Daniel Day-Lewis, Jack Nicholson and Walter Brennan all tie for the most Oscars for Lead Actor.

They have all won three each.

But Mr Nicholson is one of only two actors to be nominated for an Oscar in every decade from the 1960s to the 2000s. The other is Michael Cane.

Best Director

John Ford has won the most Best Director awards. In total he won four in 1935, 1940, 1941 and 1952.

Not only did Mr Ford win Best Director for How Green Was My Valley, but his film also won Best Cinematography and Best Supporting Actor in the same year.

Cinematography

The most awards won for Best Cinematographer goes to Joseph Ruttenberg and Leon Shamroyand.

Mr Ruttenberg won four in total in 1938, 1942, 1956, and 1958.

Mr Shamroy also won four in total in 1942, 1944, 1945, and 1963.

Makeup

Rick Baker has won seven Oscars for Best Makeup. He has been nominated 11 times, starting in 1981.

He created the “werecat” creature that Michael Jackson transforms into in the music video Thriller.

Best Foreign Language Film

Italy has won 14 awards for this category and has been nominated 32 times.

However France is not far behind with 12 wins and 40 nominations.
