A new documentary is set to look inside the hallowed hallways of The New York Times office during the period immediately following US President Donald Trump’s controversial inauguration.

Documentary filmmaker Liz Garbus is shooting the series for US pay-TV channel Showtime, according to Variety magazine.

Garbus and her crew have been filming inside the Times newsroom since January to capture the prestigious publication’s in-depth coverage of the Trump administration’s beleaguered first six months.

But those familiar with the project told CNN Garbus would likely continue filming until January, 2018.

The working title of the series is The Fourth Estate, an old-fashioned descriptor for the news media, and it will likely air in four parts.

Garbus has been sitting in on the paper’s daily editorial conferences, as well as shadowing reporters working out of Washington.

The Times has been aggressive in its coverage of Trump’s presidency, running many editorials highlighting his failings and regularly publishing stories based on White House leaks.

Trump, in turn, has hit out at the paper numerous times, accusing it of running “fake news”.

“The failing @nytimes writes false story after false story about me,” he tweeted in June this year. “They don’t even call to verify the facts of a story. A Fake News Joke.”

But in July, Trump agreed to a long, detailed and surprisingly candid interview with three Times reporters in the Oval Office.

Garbus, who scored an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature for her 2016 film What Happened, Miss Simone?, will not be the first to turn a camera lens onto the Times newsroom.

In 2011, filmmaker Andrew Rossi released his documentary Page One: Inside The New York Times, which captured a year in the life of the newsroom.
