Baby Groot steals the show in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 trailer

The internet has descended into a cuteness-induced meltdown after the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 revealed the character Baby Groot.

Baby Groot, who has seemingly regrown from Groot (after Groot died at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1) makes a mischief-filled appearance in the trailer for the follow-up to the 2014 original.

While it is still not entirely clear how Baby Groot relates to Groot, Vin Diesel, who voices both characters, did shed some light on the situation in November.

He told Collider: “There is a difference. He couldn’t be more naive as Baby Groot. I always think of the Groot that we saw in the first Guardians [of the Galaxy Volume 1] as a college level Groot.

“He’s not fully grown yet, but he’s a man. Once he sacrifices himself at the end of the movie, now he has to start all over, so to speak.

“So we’re going to see this goofy, adorable, Baby Groot thing running around the screen. Just kinda learning as he goes. I think people are going to love this movie.”

CinemaBlend speculated that Baby Groot spawned from “the leftover branches and twigs” remaining after Groot’s original sacrifice. It isn’t just Baby Groot featured in the new trailer. Most of the characters fans came to love in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1 appear in these previews too.

The trailer welcomes back Chris Pratt as the hero Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer and Bradley Cooper as Rocket.

And the oddball collection of heroes haven’t lost their charm. The trailer whips through several scenes showing their interaction at all-time levels of entertainment.

The trailer does not allude to much of the plot – save for the seemingly dangerous atomic bomb Baby Groot runs away with – but it does feature the song Fox on the Run by Sweet. It is expected to be in cinemas on May 5, 2017.
