The popular Ocean’s movie series is set to get the reboot treatment, this time with an impressive, all-female cast of Hollywood heavyweights.
Following the box office success of the Ocean’s trilogy – including Ocean’s Eleven in 2001, Ocean’s Twelve in 2004 and Ocean’s Thirteen in 2007 – Warner Brothers has confirmed a fourth film, Ocean’s Eight, will start production this year.
Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett will lead a league of ladies directed by Gary Ross of The Hunger Games franchise and produced by former Ocean’s director Steven Soderbergh.
Matt Damon and George Clooney rounded out a mostly male cast in Ocean’s Eleven.
Ocean’s Eleven, a remake of a 1960s film of the same name, starred an assortment of big names, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, and grossed $US450 million globally.
It was, however, conspicuously lacking in female actors aside from Julia Roberts, whose character was predominantly defined by her relationship with Clooney’s character.
Thankfully, that’s all about to change when the female-driven spin-off begins filming in October this year.
According to Deadline, Blanchett and Bullock are likely to be joined by Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, British thespian Helena Bonham Carter, comedian Mindy Kaling, pop star Rihanna and rapper/actress Awkwafina.

The studio is still negotiating deals with that star-studded group and one member of the title’s eight is missing.

Ocean’s Eight will follow in the footsteps of other recently rebooted classics with gender-bending casts, like the all-female Ghostbusters or the upcoming Splash remake, which will see Channing Tatum replace Daryl Hannah as the mermaid.
Ross is more than equipped to handle a cast of leading ladies, having successfully brought the first Jennifer Lawrence-led Hunger Games film to the big screen to critical and popular acclaim.
There are rumours Ross could be working on getting Lawrence on board to round out the group, a move that would clinch the film’s box office success.
Lawrence was Forbes‘ pick for 2015’s highest-paid actress with potential co-star Hathaway coming in 10th and Bullock in 13th.
The backlash has already begun on social media, with some arguing the famous women deserve more than a stale remake.
Oceans Eight. So Hollywood is like, if we have to pay women as much as men, let's only hire eight of them?

Of course, like Ghostbusters, the all-female cast has also faced scrutiny from men’s rights crusaders who feel the inclusion of women will ruin the remake.

Fortunately, it’s unlikely ladies with a career portfolio as big as Blanchett and Bullock will let the haters hold them down.
