Hollywood dream girl Jennifer Lawrence will play the romantic lead in the silver screen adaption of an Australian author’s best-selling novel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Oscar winner will play Rosie in the film version of Australian author Graeme Simsion’s novel The Rosie Project, about an unusual genetics professor (Don) who tries to calculate his way to a perfect soul mate.

His plan to meet the optimal partner goes to hell when he meets Rosie, who doesn’t exactly fit his scientific criteria.

The script for the film has been written by Scott Neudstadter and Michael Weber, who wrote the quirky cult rom-com (500) Days of Summer.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who directed the Lego Movie, were reportedly interested in directing Mr Simsion’s ‘dramedy’, but pulled out after deciding on the Han Solo Star Wars spinoff.

There’s still a search underway for a director.

Colombia Pictures, a division of Sony, are developing the movie. They’ve benefited from Lawrence’s wild popularity before with the Hunger Games series.

Lawrence is also in pre-production to star in a sci-fi love story Passengers, with Sony.

In 2013 Mr Simsion told Fairfax Media that he’d always envisioned his story would make it to cinemas.

”I spoke to a number of studios and producers as we were going through this negotiation process,” he said. “So while I can’t speak specifically about what Sony said, I can say that those who have read the book and haven’t read the script.

“Their concern was how do we capture Don’s inner voice, because that’s where a lot of the humour comes from. You don’t want to lean too heavily on a voiceover as that gets pretty clunky after a while.”

The novel has sold more than one million copies worldwide.
