Planet of the Apes conquers the box office
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has swung into first place atop the Australian box office over the weekend, ending the reign of Transformers: Age of Extinction.
The sequel to 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, again starring performance capture expert Andy Serkis as the chimp leader Caesar, debuted with $6.132 million, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
The flick opened a day earlier than the traditional Thursday release, so if you include its Wednesday takings, its total box office is now $7.096 million.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 remained in second place, as Transformers: Age of Extinction fell two spots to third.
Another animated sequel, Rio 2, also kept steady in fourth.
On the downslide was comedy 22 Jump Street, slipping two spots to fifth, while Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys, Tinker Bell & The Pirate Fairy and Maleficent each fell one place to sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
The Guard director John Michael McDonagh’s new film Calvary climbed up a place to ninth, while novel adaptation The Fault in Our Stars fell two spots to tenth.
