Frozen claims top spot at movie box office

Disney’s family animation Frozen has bumped The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug out of top spot at the movie box office.

Frozen, an animated tale of a young woman’s quest to break a kingdom’s ice spell, raked in more than $3.1 million from last Thursday to Sunday this week.

The Book Thief, starring local Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush and based on a best-selling book by Australian author Markus Zusak, made $2.4 million on its debut weekend.

The film beat the movie depicting the story behind the making of Mary Poppins, Saving Mr Banks, which earned $2.3 million.

Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty dropped two places to come in at fifth place, with $1.5 million in takings at Australian box offices.
