Australian actor Chris Hemsworth’s production company Wild State has reportedly shut up shop just four years after he launched it with friend and producer Ben Grayson.

The company has produced a number of feature films and documentaries, including Hemsworth’s Limitless docu-series, Netflix action-thriller Extraction 2 and, most recently, jewellery-heist film Crime 101, released on Amazon in April.

However, Wild State’s website now has a blank page saying it has “expired”, and media reports claim the company is being shut down.

The move comes after “a fraught few months”, according to Page Six. It said Hemsworth, his agent and lawyer had told employees they would be paid until the end of the year.

The report suggested Hemsworth’s representatives wanted him to focus on his acting rather than his “side hustle” as a producer, but also quoted an insider who said the A-lister’s decision was “more of a life choice”.

There has been no official comment from Wild State or the Thor star, who enjoys “some of the biggest salaries in Hollywood”, according to website Celebrity Net Worth.

It estimates his net worth at $US130 million ($A185 million). The actor will reportedly earn around $57 million when he returns as Thor, the God of Thunder in the next two Avengers films.

Hemsworth, who recently became a co-owner of Australian distillery Archie Rose Distilling, is also currently shooting the third film in Netflix’s successful Extraction franchise, in which he plays commando Tyler Rake.

When Wild State launched in 2022, it revealed it had entered into a first-look deal with National Geographic that included the development of unscripted projects in areas including adventure, travel and space.

“Wild State is dedicated to generating immersive narratives that both entertain and shine a light on important issues around the globe,” Hemsworth and Grayson said at the time.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to tell highly impactful, important stories in the unscripted space…”

Hemsworth’s most personal documentary produced through the National Geographic partnership was the film A Road to Remember, in which he embarked on a road trip with his father after he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s.

The actor also undertook a series of extreme challenges aimed at pushing his limits and exploring how to live longer in the documentary series Limitless.

“Making this series has been a life-changing journey,” he said when the second season, Limitless: Live Better Now, was released on Disney+ last year.

“I’ve discovered so much about my own health, resilience and what it really means to live well.”

The year after Wild State was founded, it entered into a partnership with Artists Equity –  an artist-led studio whose co-founders include actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – to collaborate on scripted projects for film and television.

Hemsworth and Grayson described themselves as long-time fans of Affleck and Damon, saying “the idea that we could join forces with them on select projects is something special”.

However, the agreement hasn’t resulted in any projects and has now expired, according to Page Six.

It reported that Wild State had since been looking to secure a new deal, first with studios and then through private equity sources.

Chris Hemsworth confronted personal challenges in Limitless.

Although the Wild State website is dormant, the latest post on its Instagram page was made just five days ago, promoting the release of the documentary Learning to Fly on Prime Video.

Learning to Fly, from the Oscar-winning producer of acclaimed free-climbing doco Free Solo, follows former competitive runner turned photographer Aisha McAdams as she documents elite ultra-marathon runners. Deadline reported in July that Wild State was on board, with Grayson and two of his colleagues named as executive producers on the film.

Two months earlier, the website also reported that Wild State had inked a partnership with the Tatts Finke Desert Race to develop a number of projects, including a “narrative feature” starring Hemsworth. A short documentary about the race was shared on YouTube in August.

“Off-road racing has been a passion in my family for a long time and we at Wild State are thrilled to partner with the Tatts Finke Desert Race on the eve of its 50th anniversary and bring this epic competition to a global audience,” Hemsworth said when the deal was announced.
