Actor Jim Carrey’s representative has sought to shut down chatter that a body double or “clone” stepped in as him at a recent award ceremony.

The Canadian-American comedian was honoured with France’s Cesar Award in Paris late last week, but the appearance of one of Hollywood’s most recognisable faces shocked the internet.

“I’m no conspiracy theorist but that’s not Jim Carrey,” said one of many posts online.

“That’s not him. Jim Carrey’s always had brown eyes prominent brown eyes. This is the worst impersonation ever,” said another.

The speculation was further fuelled by makeup artist Alexis Stone later posting a latex mask and fake teeth in a cryptic post suggesting he had impersonated Carrey.

Hosing down the commentary, Carrey’s representative told People that the Dumb and Dumber star was at the Cesar Awards, where he gave a speech in French while accepting his honorary award.

César Award general delegate Gregory Caulier told Variety the clone speculation was a “non-issue”.

“I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance,” he said.

“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation.

“Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words.

“He came with his partner, his daughter (Jane, 38), his grandson (Jackson) and 12 close friends and family members.

“His long-time publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again.”

Carrey thanked his family and “companion” Min Ah during his speech in French.

“Thank you to my wonderful family, my daughter Jane, and my grandson Jackson. I love you now and forever.

“Thank you to my sublime companion, Min Ah.

“I love you, Min Ah. And finally, thank you to the funniest man I have ever known: my father, Percy Joseph Carrey who taught me the value of love, generosity, and laughter.”
