Colombian superstar Shakira has cancelled a concert in Lima after being hospitalised with an abdominal condition.

Shakira shared a statement on social media on Sunday (local time), saying she was in hospital and doctors had told her she was not in condition to perform.

“I am very sad that I will not be able to take the stage today. I have been deeply emotional and excited about reuniting with my beloved Peruvian audience,” she said.

“The doctors whose care I am currently under have communicated that I am not in good enough condition to perform this evening.”

The singer arrived in Peru on Friday night and was scheduled to perform on Sunday and Monday.

The country is the second stop on her Latin American tour, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, following two nights in Brazil last week.

Latin fans have given Shakira a warm welcome, with crowds gathering at airports to greet her.

“Thank you for such an emotional welcome, Lima!” she posted Saturday on Instagram.

The Hips Don’t Lie singer said she hoped to recover soon.

“I hope to be released and well tomorrow so I’m able to perform. My team and the promoters are already working on a new date to communicate to you,” she said.

The singer is touring in support of her latest album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (which translates as “women don’t cry anymore”), in which she channels her highly publicised divorce from former Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué into music.

“The suffering I felt was probably the greatest I had ever experienced in my entire life, and it kept me from functioning at times,” she recently told Rolling Stone of the split.

“It felt like someone had stabbed a hole in my chest. And the sensation was so real, almost physical.

“I physically felt like I had a hole in my chest and that people could see through me.”

She and Pique share children Milan and Sasha.

Shakira’s latest record includes the global hit Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53 and won best Latin pop album at the 2024 Grammy Awards earlier in February.

Shakira’s tour continues across Latin America before heading to Canada and the US in May for more concerts.
