Taylor Swift’s side-eye after surprise Super Bowl move

Taylor Swift has received a very different reception to last year at the NFL Super Bowl as she watched boyfriend Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs play the Philadelphia Eagles.
The pop superstar, who was cheered loudly when she showed up at the big game in Las Vegas a year ago, was instead booed by the heavily pro-Eagles crowd when shown on the video boards at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans during a break in the first quarter on Sunday (US time).
Sitting next to rapper Ice Spice, Swift gave a bit of a side-eye and wrinkled her nose when she realised the booing was directed at her.
It was a big night for the Eagles fans, who watched their team trounce the Chiefs 40-22 and deny their rivals a historic three consecutive Super Bowl victories.
Swift and Kelce have been a sports-and-entertainment power couple since early last season when the four-time All-Pro tight end invited the now-14-time Grammy Award winner to watch him play in a matchup with the Bears.
Kelce had tried to deliver a friendship bracelet to Swift when she played at Arrowhead Stadium, only to be thwarted.
Their relationship blossomed as the Chiefs pursued their second consecutive Super Bowl last year. Swift was part of the on-field celebration on a cold night in Baltimore when the Chiefs beat the Ravens to win the AFC championship.

Then came Swift’s star turn at the big game in Las Vegas.
She was in the midst of her Eras Tour and had played a concert in Tokyo the same weekend. Swift made a mad dash from there to the airport, hopped on a private jet to Los Angeles and made it to Las Vegas with time to spare.
Once inside Allegiant Stadium, fans and TV cameras watched Swift win a beer-chugging contest, party with celebrity friends such as Blake Lively and Lana Del Rey, and eventually make her way to the field following the Chiefs’ 25-22 win over the 49ers.
Kelce and Swift celebrated by locking lips as red and gold confetti fell around them like rain.
There was no closely watched trip around the globe this week, though.
Australian shines on big US night
Meanwhile, it was a big night for Jordan Mailata, who became the first Australian to play in a Super Bowl victory with his Philadelphia Eagles’ upset win over Kansas City.
Mailata, the Sydney-born son of Samoan immigrants, was lauded for his influence in helping deny the Chiefs a triumph.
The first Australian to play in two Super Bowls gained some redemption on the Chiefs, who beat his Eagles for the famed Vince Lombardi Trophy two years ago.
The 27-year-old, who played junior rugby league for the South Sydney Rabbitohs and had never played American football until drafted by the Eagles in 2018, is among four Australians to play in a Super Bowl.
But he’s the first to triumph with punters Ben Graham (Arizona, 2009), Mitch Wishnowsky (San Francisco, 2020) and Arryn Siposs, who was Mailata’s Eagles teammate two years ago, all losing.
Another Australian does have a Super Bowl ring: Jesse Williams was on the Seattle Seahawks’ roster in their 2014 triumph but didn’t play during the season because of a knee injury.
In the showcase fixture on Sunday night (Monday AEDT) at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, the Bankstown-born Mailata was hailed for his display as an offensive linesman.
“Jordan Mailata … he just covers them up, it’s like he just becomes night-time, he’s just like the moon, he just blocks out everything,” gushed Louis Riddick, a former NFL player, in commentary for ESPN.
The 2.03-metre tall, 166-kilogram Mailata helped the Eagles storm to a 24-0 halftime lead amid a horror showing from Kansas City’s megastar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was sacked three times and intercepted twice by the long break.
The nightmare for Mahomes, rated among the greatest quarterbacks ever, continued on resumption when sacked on consecutive plays for the second time in the game.
The Eagles soon added a field goal and another touchdown for an irretrievable 34-0 advantage before the Chiefs finally got on the scoreboard with a touchdown 34 seconds before the end of the third quarter.
