‘Too many tears’: Meghan reveals sad family loss

Meghan's tribute to Guy

Meghan Markle and her family are mourning the loss of her favourite pet, rescue beagle Guy.

The Duchess of Sussex revealed the death of her beloved dog in a lengthy Instagram post on Wednesday (Australian time).

“I have cried too many tears to count – the type of tears that make you get in the shower with the absurd hope that the running water on your face will somehow make you not feel them, or pretend they’re not there. But they are. And that’s OK too,” she wrote.

Meghan’s post features photos of Guy, as well as her husband Prince Harry and rare images of the couple’s two young children, Archie and Lilibet. The youngsters can also be heard talking and singing in the footage.

“We love you, Guy, and we’ll be true when you’re not near us; we’re blue,” they sing with Meghan at one point.

The duchess adopted Guy from a pet shelter while she was living in Canada – after he had been given just days to live.

“I swooped him up …. and fell in love,” she wrote.

The beagle featured heavily in her social media in the years following, including the now-discontinued blog The Tig. He also famously made the journey to London with Meghan when her relationship with Prince Harry became more serious – even travelling in a car with the late Queen Elizabeth ahead of the couple’s wedding.

“He was with me at Suits, when I got engaged (and then married), when I became a mom … He was with me for everything: The quiet, the chaos, the calm, the comfort,” she wrote.

Meghan also reveals Guy dodged death for a second time in a “terrible accident” shortly before she moved to Britain. She said he required months of surgery afterwards, and could not leave the vet clinic.

“H and I would drive late at night, after hours, to see Guy as he recovered in Surrey for months on end,” she said.

Meghan said Guy features in her upcoming Netflix series, With Love Meghan. It drops on January 15.

“Because many of you will now see Guy in this new series, I hope you’ll come to understand why I am so devastated by his loss. I think you may fall a little bit in love too,” she wrote.

She finished her post with thanks to her “sweet Guy” for “so many years of unconditional love.”

“You filled my life in ways you’ll never know,” she wrote.

The tribute is Meghan’s third post on her new Instagram account, following the trailer for the Netflix series and a New Year’s Day video.
