Singer Sir Elton John has been left with “only limited vision” after a “severe eye infection”.

The 77-year-old revealed he was healing from the infection in one eye but said his recovery would take “some time”.

In a post on Instagram, Sir Elton said: “Over the summer, I’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye.

“I am healing but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.

“I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks.

“I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery so far.”

The note is signed off “with love and gratitude”.

Numerous stars replied to the post wishing the singer well, including fashion designer Donatella Versace, radio presenter Bob Harris and actor Layton Williams.

“Take your time and recover, Elton. We’ll be here waiting for your return when you’re healthy and ready,” Versace wrote, while Harris said: “Sending you much love Elton.”

It comes just days before Sir Elton was expected to appear in public at the world premiere of his documentary film Elton John: Never Too Late at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on Friday.

Variety reports that a rep has confirmed the singer still plans to attend.

The documentary will have its European premiere at this year’s BFI London Film Festival in October, before it is released on Disney+ in December.

Sir Elton’s announcement comes after he had double knee surgery earlier this year.

“By the time the summer rolls around, he’ll have two brand new spanking knees,” his husband David Furnish told British tabloid The Sun in March.

“I think you’ll see him breakdancing down the carpet next year.”

Sir Elton has effectively retired from touring, having played his final tour show at the Glastonbury Festival in June before an estimated 120,000 people.

He was made a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour at a ceremony in November 2021, and is known for hits including Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting, I’m Still Standing and Your Song.

In 2019, he was played by Kingsman actor Taron Egerton in a film about his life called Rocketman.
