‘Working miracles’: Jimmy Barnes shares update after hip surgery

Jimmy Barnes celebrates another No.1 with Cold Chisel bandmate Ian Moss

Musician Jimmy Barnes has shared his delight at being discharged from hospital after reaching a health milestone of walking unaided after hip surgery.

The 68-year-old former Cold Chisel frontman was forced to cancel his solo tour in August and September and have surgery when he became crippled with pain.

It came eight months after he underwent open-heart surgery.

Posting to social media this week, Barnes told fans he was progressing through a gruelling physiotherapy rehab regime that had “worked miracles”.

He said he couldn’t wait to be back to be back on stage entertaining fans with songs from Cold Chisel’s 50 Years – The Best Of album which rocketed to No.1 on the ARIA Album Chart last week.

“This is 50 years of love and dreams in a record.. thank you so much for your support,” Barnes posted.

Barnes revealed he was following a strict high-protein recovery diet of shakes and fresh vegetables from the garden.

“I’m being loaded up with protein and iron to rebuild muscles that I never had,” he joked.

The Working Class Man singer was released from St Luke’s Hospital in Sydney and posted that he was back on home on Monday.

“I can’t tell how great it feels to be back in my own bed, back to our home and the beautiful garden. Of course being very spoilt,” he wrote earlier this week.

“I can’t say enough about St Luke’s Hospital. Thanks team for nursing me through a crucial week of my recovery.

“The physio rehab department has worked miracles and I am up and walking unaided. Beyond grateful to you all.”

Wife Jane has been spoiling the legendary musician with his homemade favourites.

“Sometimes only a simple double cheeseburger will do… and you know who makes the best one?” he posted alongside a photo.

Jane also baked his favourite lobster mornay for his return.

“If I’m to be on a high protein recovery diet, I’ve come to the right place. Jane’s made me some cranberry protein shortbread, a health morning tea. I’m not leaving.”

Last December, Barnes had urgent open-heart surgery to fight the spread of an aggressive bacterial infection.

The bacteria he had been fighting spread to an otherwise healthy valve that was replaced some years ago due to a congenital defect.

Barnes has battled other health concerns in recent years. In 2022, he cancelled his summer tour to have urgent back and hip surgery for severe pain.
