Justin Timberlake will “have a lot to say” about his arrest when he is able to, his lawyers say.
The 43-year-old pop star’s car was pulled over in Sag Harbour, New York, early on Tuesday (local time), and he was detained on charges of driving his BMW while intoxicated after taking a field sobriety test and allegedly refusing a breathalyser.
On Wednesday (US time), Timberlake’s legal team vowed to “vigorously defend” him in court.
“We look forward to vigorously defending Mr Timberlake against these allegations. We will have a lot to say at the appropriate time. He is currently awaiting full discovery from the DA’s office,” Timberlake’s lawyer, Edward Burke Jr told The New York Post’s Page Six column.
According to the paperwork, the arresting officer noticed that Timberlake’s eyes were “bloodshot and glassy, a strong odour of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot, and he performed poorly on all standardised field sobriety tests”.
After being taken to a police station, the former NSYNC singer had the report was read aloud to him. He responded: “No, I’m not doing a chemical test.”
After being read the report two more times, Timberlake said: “I refuse.”
Since then, it has emerged the Cry Me A River claimed to have consumed just “one martini” before following his friends home in his car.
Page Six is also reporting that the officer who arrested Timberlake did not recognise the 10-time Grammy winner.
An insider told the paper that the officer “was so young that he didn’t even know” who Timberlake was.
“Justin said under his breath, ‘This is going to ruin the tour’,” a second source has also claimed to Page Six.
The cop replied, ‘What tour?’ Justin said, ‘The world tour’.”
Timberlake has been charged with one count of driving while intoxicated. He’s also received two citations – one for running a stop sign and another for failure to remain in his lane.
Timberlake was held overnight for arraignment and later released on his own recognisance.
His driver’s licence will be suspended in the state of New York.
He is due back in court on July 26.
Ahead of that, the singer has two concerts in Chicago on June 21 and 22, and two more next week at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
He is also scheduled to perform a concert in Poland on the same day as his next court date.
