Australian actor Ruby Rose will suit up as the DC Comics hero Batwoman for a television series in the US, Variety reports.
CW Television Network had previously announced the character would make her debut in an annual crossover event between four of the network’s DC shows: The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl.
CW is now reportedly developing a series based around an openly gay character, whose real name is Kate Kane.
“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, she soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence,” the show’s summary reads.
“But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a saviour, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
Rose’s casting came after the network made it a priority to cast an openly gay actor in the role, The Hollywood Reporter said.
Rose, best known to international audiences for her role of Stella in Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, also features in movies The Meg, Pitch Perfect 3 and John Wick: Chapter 2.
The Vampire Diaires writer Caroline Dries will reportedly pen the screenplay and serve as an executive producer on the Batwoman series.
