Oprah insists she won’t run for president

American television mogul Oprah Winfrey has reiterated she will not run for president, saying it would “kill” her, drawing a line over speculation about a potential 2020 bid.

In an interview with British Vogue, the actor and producer again turned to the subject after much talk about whether she would eye the White House following a rousing speech at this year’s Golden Globe awards.

“In that political structure – all the non-truths, the bulls–t, the crap, the nastiness, the back-handed backroom stuff that goes on – I feel like I could not exist,” Winfrey told the magazine. She is featured on its August cover.

“I would not be able to do it. It’s not a clean business. It would kill me.”

Winfrey got a standing ovation when she spoke in support of victims of sexual misconduct in her acceptance speech for a Golden Globe for lifetime achievement, in which she praised women who exposed harassment and abuse in Hollywood and elsewhere.

“People talk about ‘these are such dark times’ but what if we shift the paradigm? Because I see it differently,” Winfrey told British Vogue about the Me Too and Time’s Up movements. The magazine published excerpts of her interview on its website.

“I see, ‘Isn’t this remarkable that we’re waking up?’. For years, women have endured craziness. This is what’s happening to people,” she said.

“They’re allowing themselves to not just become corroded, but to become hysterical. You’ve got to lean to the happiness.”

Winfrey also spoke about being one of just a handful of guests from Hollywood to attend the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in May.

“It left me feeling that anything is possible through the power of love,” she said, referencing the Episcopalian bishop who spoke at the ceremony.

“Reverend Curry was right!”
