Actress Jennifer Garner has responded to the fascination with her startled facial expression at the Oscars, ‘revealing’ three possible things she might have been thinking in the now-viral clip.

Garner was filmed during the Sunday night (US time) awards show applauding from the audience, before suddenly halting her clapping and looking deeply concerned.

The clip of Garner’s drastic mood change was shared on Twitter with the question, “What realisation did Jennifer Garner just come to?”, prompting thousands of hilarious suggestions.

Garner, 45, finally weighed in with a few suggestions of her own on Wednesday, sharing the clip to Instagram and narrating her internal monologue in a mock voiceover.

“Congrats to Shape of Water! Maybe I should date a fish?” Garner joked of Best Picture winner, underwater-themed fantasy film The Shape of Water.

“Hey Jimmy Kimmel, what’s in your wallet? Wait, where’s my wallet?” she added, referring to her commercials for US bank Capital One.

And finally, “Can’t wait to work with Lena Dunham! Wait did I sign a nudity waiver?” – a joke about Girls creator Lena Dunham, who is famous for stripping off on camera.

While the real reason for her mood swing will remain a mystery, Garner’s lighthearted response won her even more fans, with the video’s original poster, Jezebel writer Bobby Finger, tweeting: “I can’t believe she memed herself. What a treat. That Jennifer Garner’s a good egg.”

Garner has become something of a social media star since joining Instagram in September 2017, sharing workout videos, kid-friendly recipes, photos of herself walking her pet chicken, and a hilarious series of videos of her reading books to her golden retriever, Birdie.

On the day of the Oscars, Garner’s name was a trending hashtag on social media – but not just for the reaction video.

Her cobalt blue Versace gown rocketed to the top of best-dressed lists, while her super-fit physique got fans excited for her return to the big screen in 2018 action movie, Peppermint.

Garner, who was married to actor Ben Affleck for 12 years, rose to fame as lead character Sydney Bristow in the action-thriller TV series Alias and superhero films Daredevil and Elektra, but stopped appearing in physically demanding roles after the birth of her first daughter, Violet, in 2005.

Peppermint has seen her return to the gym and stunt training in order to reclaim her position as Hollywood’s go-to action heroine.

She and Affleck have three children together – daughters Violet, 12, and Seraphina, 9, and son Samuel, 6. The stars share joint custody.
