Margot Robbie has been beaten for the best actress Oscar for I, Tonya by Frances McDormand, who took the gong for her turn in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Queenslander Robbie, 27, also produced I Tonya, which picked up the award for supporting actress, Allison Janney, and a nomination for editing Tatiana Riegel.

But the latter award was won by Australia’s Lee Smith for World War II epic Dunkirk.

It was the third time Smith, 57, was up for the editing gong, having been nominated for The Dark Knight (2009) and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2004).

“This is the most awesome thing that can happen to a guy like me,” the Sydney-based editor said in his acceptance speech at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on Sunday (US time).

Smith, who started his movie career as a 16-year-old making coffee at a Sydney film production business, has formed a strong bond with Dunkirk’s British director Christopher Nolan, having worked on seven movies together.
