George Clooney drops massive hint on his acting future

George Clooney has hinted he may be giving up acting because he’s not getting leading man roles anymore – but it’s fine because he’s cashed up.

“Acting used to be how I paid the rent,” the Suburbicon director told The Sunday Times in a new interview.

“But I sold a tequila company for a billion f––kg dollars. I don’t need money. I have money.”

Clooney confirmed in June that he and his business partners — Cindy Crawford’s husband Rande Gerber and real estate mogul Mike Meldeman — sold their Tequila company, Casamigos, for US$1 billion ($A1.3 billion).

Money aside, Clooney, who hasn’t been in a film since 2016’s Money Monster, admitted acting is not a priority for him now.

“Look, I acted for a long time and, you know, I’m 56. I’m not the guy that gets the girl anymore,” he told The Sunday Times, adding he “shouldn’t be the guy that gets the girl.”

Still, he’s not altogether ruling out a return, saying he would “jump” at a role like Paul Newman’s in The Verdict.

“But there aren’t that many like that,” he said.

Instead of getting in front of the cameras, Clooney is more about directing and producing, and said his huge wealth means he “can fight to make movies I want to make.”

For the last 15 years, most of the movies he has been in “weren’t going to get made if I didn’t do them”, he said.

“Nobody was going to make Good Night and Good Luck, Michael Clayton or Up in the Air, and I fought to get those out there.”

As to how hard he went into bat for passion projects, he said he did whatever it took: “I used to do coffee commercials.”

These days, Clooney has his hands full with domestic matters since he and his lawyer wife Amal Clooney welcomed twins Alexander and Ella in June.

The family has jetted between London, where the babies were born, and their villa on the shores of Lake Como.

Hands-on dad Clooney (I’m the diaper guy”) has said one thing has shocked him about fatherhood later in life – introducing the twins to solid foods.

“How that goes in as a carrot and how that comes out the way it comes out is shocking,” he said. “What happens?”

Even as he’s kept busy with his fatherhood role, Clooney said that since Donald Trump was elected as US President, “so many people” have pushed him to get involved in politics, “specifically at the highest office.”

Could we see President Clooney?

His father, retired anchorman and game show host Nicholas Clooney, ran for Congress and, “it’s been in our family forever”, but “I don’t have political aspirations.”

As for his thoughts on Mr Trump, Clooney said, “Trump, for all his terrible instincts, is very charismatic. A TV star.

“People didn’t vote for him because he accomplished anything. They knew him. And they were, like, he’s exciting.”
