Chris Hemsworth has revealed his Hollywood success has placed stress on his marriage, admitting wife Elsa Pataky has had to make major sacrifices for his career.

In a new interview with GQ magazine released today, the Australian actor spoke candidly about his seven-year marriage to the Spanish actress, 41, divulging why it’s not perfect and that he wants to be more romantic.

The couple met when their dialect coach set them up on a blind date in 2010 and were married months later, but then spent “years” living separate lives, according to Hemsworth, 34.

“My wife and I fell in love, had kids, didn’t really see each other for a few years, then fell back in love,” the Thor star told GQ.

“In terms of work, she’s certainly given up more than I have. She’d like me to step back and be at home with the kids more, and of course, I want that, too,”

“But I feel like I’m at this crucial point in my career—I’ve just got to set up for longevity or I’ll slip off.”

Hemsworth admitted he could improve on his dramatic declarations of love and his listening skills at home.

“There’s no shortage of how much I tell her I love her,” he said, “but I guess there’s no detail in it, why or how.

“I can be so attentive and listen to people I hardly know, then you get home and you’re like, ‘What was that?’.”

Pataky, meanwhile, has previously spoken about being hesitant to pursue a relationship with Hemsworth after meeting him just as his career started taking off.

“It was a time when he was just starting his career, he was super attractive,” she told a Spanish talk show.

“I thought: ‘Girls are going crazy for him, what chances do I have?’ I thought it was very difficult, but to be honest he insisted.”

Now based in Byron Bay, Pataky – best known for her role as Elena in the Fast and the Furious franchise – spends time at home taking care of their children India, five, and twins Tristan and Sasha, three, but hopes to return to her career soon.

“We live in Australia and I want to do things here and start working, and for people to know me a little bit more than as Chris’s wife,” she told Stellar magazine this year.

Family friend Andrea Moreno told Stellar while Hemsworth may be a big name in Hollywood, back home in Spain it’s Pataky who’s the real star.

“Elsa in Spain is like Cate Blanchett in Australia,” she said.

“Pretty much everybody, no matter what age group, knows who Elsa is. The Spanish love Chris because of his humility and good humour, and dedication to his family and Elsa.”
