Emmys 2017: Nicole Kidman’s steamy celebration
Nicole Kidman found a surprising way to spark headlines at the 2017 Emmy Awards and it wasn’t by her emotional speech for winning the outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie for her role in Big Little Lies.
In a ‘did-that-just-happen?’ moment, the Australian actress shared an oddly-intimate kiss with her co-star Alexander Skarsgård during the ceremony.
As Skarsgård headed up to the stage to collect his own Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or movie, he made a pitstop where Kidman – who played his wife in Big Little Lies – had risen from her seat.
He put his arms around her waist and she held his face in her hands before the pair, who shared raunchy sex scenes in the series, kissed full on the lips.
As celebrity site Us Weekly put it, “Everyone freaked out.”
Certainly, Twitter lit up, with one user saying, “No one was more surprised when Nicole Kidman kissed Alexander Skarsgard on the lips than Alexander Skarsgard.”
But Kidman’s singer husband Keith Urban – rocking a mullet – was unfussed by the pash-and-dash, clapping and beaming as Skarsgård moved on from Nicole to the microphone.
When Kidman herself had her moment in the spotlight, making her acceptance speech, she kept it G-rated and praised her support crew, notably “my darling Keith.”
Thanking her “huge artistic family”, Kidman said, “I am also a mother and a wife.
“I have two little girls, Sunny and Faith, whom I asked to help me pursue this artistic path and they have to sacrifice so much for it,” she said, as Urban seemed on the brink of tears.
“So, this is yours. I want my little girls to have this on their shelf and look at it and go, ‘Every time my mama didn’t put me to bed, it’s because of this. I got something!’”

There were, of course, other Emmy moments that raised eyebrows.
Host Stephen Colbert’s scathing opening monologue included a cameo from former White House press secrtary Sean Spicer.
Cameras captured various stars looking shocked, with the Los Angeles Times reporting “perhaps the most surprised person in the room was Melissa McCarthy,” who won an Emmy this year thanks to her Spicer impersonation on Saturday Night Live.
Little Big Lies’s Laura Dern almost had her win for best support actress in a limited series or television movie hijacked. Feud’s Jackie Hoffman, who missed out in the category, lost it when Dern’s name was called.
“Damn it, damn it!” she yelled twice, before hitting social media from her seat to theorise that Dern, the daughter of actors Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern, owed her win to nepotism.
“Laura Dern had famous parents,” she tweeted. “Forgive me for being from real people #elitism.”
Hoffman later made it clear she was just sending up her initial reaction, tweeting claims about Dern including that she “looted art from Nazi victims” using the hashtag #soreloser.
Elisabeth Moss, who won for lead actress in a drama series (The Handmaid’s Tale) brought home ladies’ night with an exuberant speech thanking her mother for teaching her that “you can be kind and f–king badass.”
