Top Gear star Richard Hammond lucky to survive ‘frightening’ crash
Former Top Gear host Richard Hammond has been airlifted to hospital after surviving a car accident that his colleague Jeremy Clarkson has described as the “most frightening” and “biggest crash” he’s ever seen.
Hammond’s car lost control, flipped and crashed before bursting into flames while the 47-year-old British TV presenter was filming in the Swiss Alps.
He had been driving electric super car Rimac Concept One, worth $A3.4 million, on Saturday as part of Amazon’s car-themed TV show The Grand Tour.
The revhead escaped the wreckage without suffering any serious injuries, with the impact leaving the car on its roof and scorched.

A spokesman for The Grand Tour said Hammond was “conscious and talking”.
“Richard … climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames,” he said.
“He was flown by air ambulance to hospital in St Gallen to be checked over, revealing a fracture to his knee.
“Nobody else was in the car or involved in the accident, and we’d like to thank the paramedics on site for their swift response.”

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
The Rimac super car is understood to be able to reach speeds as high as 320km/h.
A statement from the organisers of the Bergrennen-Hemberg race confirmed the accident took place during a demonstration run between the training courses.
“The vehicle left the track and landed in the meadow.”
The statement added that rescuers were “very fast” to reach the scene and the fire brigade quickly extinguished the burning car.
Spokesman Marco Moser told the Associated Press the demonstration runs were intended to showcase unusual vehicles and offer spectators “something special”.
“No accident is nice for us but accidents do happen in high-risk sports,” Moser said.
“Of course when a car goes up in flames, then there’s quite a bit more adrenaline.
“We’re happy that Richard Hammond is doing well, under the circumstances.”
It was the biggest crash I've ever seen and the most frightening but incredibly, and thankfully, Richard seems to be mostly OK.

‘Not going to risk it’
The incident came 11 years after Hammond suffered life-threatening head injuries following a high-speed 462km/h crash while filming for BBC’s Top Gear.
The impact of that 2006 crash left him in a coma for two weeks, but he made a full recovery.
After cheating death, the father of two told The Mirror he was done with high-speed stunts.
Hammond and his wife Mindy are parents to two girls: Izzy, 16, and Willow, 13.
“I have a beautiful wife and two beautiful daughters,” he said at the time.
“I’m not going to risk leaving them. Not for their sake but for mine.”
