Not content with being an Oscar-nominated actor, Hollywood star Jake Gyllenhaal has surprised and delighted fans by sharing a video of himself singing ahead of an upcoming performance on Broadway.

Spoiler alert: he’s really, really good.

Gyllenhaal shared the video on Facebook of himself rehearsing for Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George and the public reaction has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Good lord I had no idea he could sing too,” one Facebook user commented.

“Dude I didn’t know you had this gorgeous Broadway voice all along,” another wrote.

“After watching your intense, Oscar-worthy performance in Nocturnal Animals and now this, I’m completely stunned by your immense talent. Your voice gave me goosebumps.”

The 36-year-old actor, who received an Oscar nomination in 2006 for Brokeback Mountain, plays 19th-century painter Georges Seurat in the musical, which was inspired by one of Seurat’s paintings.

The video of Gyllenhaal singing one of the production’s most famous songs, Finishing the Hat, was shot and directed by True Detective director Corey Fukunaga, but the vocals are all Jake’s.

This won’t be the first time Gyllenhaal sings on stage, but it’s the first glimpse the wider public has been given of his singing skills.

Prior to his upcoming turn in Sunday in the Park with George, Gyllenhaal also starred in Little Shop of Horrors.

Although Gyllenhaal is not a professionally trained singer, like most actors he’s had to develop some semblance of a singing voice for certain acting roles.
