Pop queen Katy Perry has been reduced to tears during an emotional meeting with Tony Marrero, a survivor of the Florida nightclub shooting, on The Ellen Show.
Marrero suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the June 12 shooting at Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, which killed 49 people.
His friend, Luis Vielma, who was just 22 years old, lost his life.
In the weeks following the attack, which was a hate crime perpetrated by a security guard in the name of Islamic State, Marrero said he coped by listening to Perry’s song Rise.
“The lyrics to that song are so powerful … I embraced it,” Marrero told host Ellen Degeneres. “I play it and play it because it is so beautiful.”

“Have you met Katy yet or no?” Degeneres asked. “You want to meet Katy?”
Perry then emerged from backstage to the delight of a shocked Marrero, who immediately burst into tears.
Perry was also emotional, revealing she had folded a napkin and put it in her sleeve “like a little granny” in anticipation of her tearful reaction.
“I just want to say thank you for everything you do. Your lyrics to that song helped me from the day I was in the hospital all the way to now. You’re amazing,” Marrero said.
“I’m happy I could be there in my own little way to help you,” Perry responded, before making a generous gesture to ensure Marrero could continue thriving well into the future.
“I’ve heard that you’re creative just like me … I personally want to pay for your first year at film school,” Perry said, before the pair hugged it out.
