George Clooney has revealed the intricate details of the moment he proposed to his wife of over a year, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney.

During an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show, the 54-year-old actor said he went to a lot of effort to pop the question.

“I think about six months till I actually thought I might pop the question,” Clooney told Degeneres, after revealing that he never thought he would get married.

“It was one of the horrible moments,” he said of the proposal.

“We didn’t talk about it, it wasn’t like ‘Oh, maybe we should get married’ or anything.

“I plotted the whole thing out, had the ring hidden behind her, I had music playing, my aunt Rosemary was going to sing ‘Why Shouldn’t I’ and I’d cooked dinner.”

Unfortunately for Clooney, his wife unknowingly nearly foiled his plan several times before he could finally ask her the all-important question.

“She comes in, she’s just come back from London … and she’s like, ‘Well, maybe we should just order in’ and I’m like, ‘no I made dinner’,” Clooney explained.

“I’ve got it all set up and timed out … and she gets up to go wash the dishes which she’s never done.

“Finally I blew out the candle and I said ‘I think the lighter is in the box behind you’.

“She reached around and pulls out the box and I’ve got just the ring sitting in there and she pulls it out and looks at it and says ‘It’s a ring’. Like somebody had left it there!

“I got down on my knee and said, ‘I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life without you’. And she kept looking at the ring and looking at me and saying, ‘Oh my God’.

“It was like 25 minutes … finally I said, ‘Look, I hope the answer’s yes, but I need an answer because I’m 52 and I could throw out my hip pretty soon’.

“And then she said yes.”

“It was one of those funny things,” the actor told DeGeneres. “From the minute we met, we just hit it off. And from the minute we met, we just sort of felt like we were going to be together.”
