Celebrities front TV ads for marriage equality

Actors, footballers, comedians and chefs are calling for marriage equality in a series of new advertisements to hit Australian television screens.

The ads, featuring actors Hugo Weaving and Julia Morris, go to air from Sunday as part of Australian Marriage Equality’s new #WeCanDoThis campaign.

• Push for gay marriage plebiscite gains steam

The campaign coincides with a cross-party bill to legalise gay marriage, due to be introduced when federal parliament resumes this week.

Meanwhile, same-sex marriage campaigners continued their push for marriage equality at rallies in Perth and Sydney on Sunday.

In NSW, more than 4000 supporters marched up Oxford Street in an event organised by the Community Action Against Homophobia group.

Sydney teenagers Megan Robinson, Demi Foundas and Emma Langan were happy to attend their first rally in support of gay marriage on Sunday but wished it wasn’t necessary.

“It shouldn’t be a debate,” 15-year-old Demi said.

“We just think people should be able to live how they want to live,” her friend Megan, also 15, said.

In Perth, 5000 rally-goers met at the Forrest Chase shopping centre to call on Federal MPs to legalise gay marriage.

The rallies follow similar events in Brisbane and Hobart on Saturday.

Those attending Queensland’s Equal Love event packed out Queens Gardens before marching through the central business district.

In Tasmania, 1500 crammed into Hobart’s City Hall to show their support for marriage equality.

The rallies precede the introduction of a cross-party bill to legalise gay marriage when the Federal Parliament resumes this week.

The private member’s bill will go to the Liberal party room after it is moved to decide if members will be allowed a free vote.
