Serial podcast: Adnan Syed to get appeal

Serial subject Adnan Syed will have his appeal heard after the wildly successful podcast exposed inconsistencies on the carriage of his case.

The podcast, downloaded millions of times around the world, showed the murder trial which jailed Syed for life did not include crucial testimony that would have given him an alibi.

The Maryland Court of Appeals in the United States has allowed Syed to appeal his sentence.

According to the podcast, one of Syed’s friends, Asia McClain, was able to testify that he was not at the scene of the murder of Hae Min Lee in 1999.

Syed and Lee were in a teenage relationship but had split months before her murder.

“We are very pleased with the Court of Special Appeals’ ruling and we think it’s the fair thing to do and it’s in the interest of justice that this case be remanded to hear the testimony of Asia McClain,” Syed’s lawyer Justin Brown told The Huffington Post Monday.

“From the beginning we’ve wanted Asia McClain’s testimony to be part of the record and now it looks likely that it’ll happen.”

Syed has maintained his innocence since before he was jailed for life in 2000 as a teenager.

His legal team has 45 days to lodge their appeal documents.
