Brand has allegedly told friends he is planning to take the job at City Hall, standing on an independent “anti-politics” ticket.

While Brand himself is yet to confirm the rumours, a spokesperson for the star has not ruled anything out.

According to the London Evening Standard, a spokeswoman for the Brit funny man refused to comment when asked about his political hopes.

Brand has long been an outspoken political commentator, infamous for his daring public stunts and controversial interviews.

In a recent interview with the Financial Times, the actor admitted his strong views may prevent him from continuing his Hollywood career in the future.

“I’d give up everything. I’ve thought about this a lot, whether or not I’m prepared to go to prison or die for what I believe in. The answer is 100 per cent, without question, yes, I’m willing to die for this,” Brand said.

Brand, whose career has earned him millions, also said he felt “guilty” about his earnings and found the trappings of capitalism “worthless and meaningless”.

“It makes me scared if I think about money too much, then it makes me feel guilty. The only thing I tell the people who look after my money is, ‘Make sure my f***ing taxes are 100 per cent legitimately paid,’ and then I do my own s**t.”
