Disheveled and desperate is not how most people picture US President Donald Trump. But that’s exactly the way a Syrian artist has depicted him.

Abdalla Al Omari, 31, has been painting world leaders as refugees for his exhibition The Vulnerability Series.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was portrayed as a man in need, carrying a cardboard sign with the words “Help me, God bless you”.

He wore a cap backwards and grubby hooded jumper in the portrait.

Mr Trump clutched a family portrait, a little girl and a swag in the painting.

On his website, Mr Al Omari said he wanted to depict powerful people in vulnerable positions, “breaking their image of ultimate power”.

World leaders were lined up with hats and pots in their hands for a work called “The Queue”.

A portrait of North Korea’s Kim Jong-un depicted him as a child wearing pyjamas, holding a toy missile.

Syrian President Bashar Hafez al-Assad was portrayed in worn, wet clothes, and a paper boat on his head.

“Even I felt sorry for my version of Assad,” Mr Al Omari said on his website.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is painted hunched over with a UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) paper bag in his hand.

Mr Al Omari also painted portraits of former US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

He began the series in Brussels after fleeing Syria and being granted asylum in Belgium.

The Vulnerability Series is exhibiting at Ayyam Gallery in Dubai until July 6.

The New Daily has approached Mr Al Omari for comment.
