When streaming giant Netflix announced it had commissioned local production, Territory, with filming in Kakadu National Park and Tipperary Station in the Northern Territory, there were immediate comparisons to the Kevin Costner epic series, Yellowstone.

“An impressive-looking production that’s a little like a Down Under answer to Yellowstone,” wrote ScreenRealm after watching a full length trailer earlier this month.

Starring Anna Torv (The Newsroom), Michael Dorman (For All Mankind, Joe Pickett), Robert Taylor (The Feds), Sam Corlett (Vikings: Valhalla) and Sara Wiseman (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), this six-part neo-western is set to premiere on October 24.

Created by Timothy Lee (Mystery Road, Bump) and Ben Davies (Bondi Rescue, The First Inventors, Outback Ringer), Territory adds to Netflix’s growing slate of Australian productions including thriller Run Rabbit Run starring Sarah Snook, and drama series Stateless starring Cate Blanchett.

Netflix says Territory “follows the fight for power in the remote and unforgiving Australian outback when the world’s largest cattle station is left without an apparent heir”.

“Imagine the family drama of your favourite prime-time soap, but set in a region so rough and remote that nearly everything can kill you.

“When Marianne Station is left without a clear successor, generational clashes threaten to tear the Lawson family apart.

“Sensing this once-great dynasty is in decline, the outback’s most powerful factions — rival cattle barons, desert gangsters, Indigenous elders and billionaire miners — move in for the kill.

“With billions of dollars at stake, everyone wants a piece of the pie.”

For the record, Yellowstone drew an audience on Paramount Network of 8.8 million viewers for its season five premiere, with Variety reporting simulcasts across Country Music Television, TVLand and Pop TV bringing in numbers up to 10.5 million.
