For the first time in years, singer-songwriter and pianist Billy Joel has announced he will be releasing brand new music next month.

The Piano Man’s last release was in 2007, so fans were delighted to hear his new song, Turn The Lights Back On, will be out on February 1.

On Instagram, Joel teased a very short preview, announcing that the song was available to be pre-ordered on streaming services and on vinyl.

Freddy Wexler, a Grammy-nominated producer and songwriter, produced and wrote the song. Joel, Arthur Bacon and Wayne Hector all have writing credits.

Joel, whose hits include Uptown Girl and Piano Man, teased that he was working on something new back in December when he shared a video on TikTok of him speaking to the audience at one of his shows.

“I have good news and bad news, I’ll give you the bad news first. We don’t have anything new to play for you,” Joel says in the video.

“The good news is you don’t have to sit through something you have no idea what it is. Although we’ve got a little something we’re working on you might hear sometime.”

While Joel hasn’t released any new music since 2007, he has still been active within the entertainment industry.

He retired from songwriting in 1993, after the release of River of Dreams. At the time, he said it was because he thought he couldn’t be as good as he hoped.

“I was always trying to feel like there was a real progression in my work, and eventually I realised I was only going to be X good,” he said according to The Guardian.

“Because of that I knew I was going to beat myself up for not being better. So I stopped.”

In 2007, he released All My Life and followed it up with Christmas in Fallujah the same year. He wrote that song but it was performed by Cass Dillion.

In 2008, he recorded his own version of Christmas in Fallujah live.

More recently, Joel has been on tour with Stevie Nicks and had a residency at Madison Square Garden.
