Sophia Loren has emergency surgery after fall at home

Oscar-winning actor Sophia Loren has had emergency surgery following a terrible fall in her Swiss home.

The 89-year-old fell in her bathroom and suffered several serious fractures to different parts of her hip and her femur.

The injuries required urgent surgery, her agent Andrea Giusti said.

Loren’s representative also confirmed both Loren’s sons, Carlo and Edoardo Ponti, were at her bedside.

Loren was due to open a restaurant named after her in Bari, Italy, on September 26 (local time) but has cancelled all public engagements.

The restaurant, the fourth with her name, posted about the accident and wished her a speedy recovery.

“Fortunately everything went well and the Lady will be back with us very soon,” wrote Loren restaurant on Instagram.

Loren is one of the last surviving icons from the classic era of the silver screen.

She was named by the American Film Institute as one of the greatest stars of classical Hollywood cinema.

During her illustrious career, Loren starred opposite Hollywood greats including Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Cary Grant – whom she rejected a marriage proposal from after they appeared together in The Pride And The Passion in 1957.

Her performance as Cesira in 1960’s Two Women, directed by Vittorio De Sica, earned her the Oscar for best actress and made her the first performer to win an Academy Award for a foreign-language film.

In 1990, Loren also won an honorary award at the Oscars for being “one of the genuine treasures of world cinema” who has had a “career rich with memorable performances” and added “permanent lustre” to the industry.

The Academy-Award winning Italian actor was married to film producer Carlo Ponti Sr from 1966 until his death in 2007.
