At a celebrity Sunday brunch at Rose Café in Los Angeles, guests were passed frose cocktails and wine to toast the host, model and social media sensation Chrissy Teigen.

Teigen toasted them back – with an energy drink.

Despite her role as a spokesperson for a vodka company and past spruiking for a rum brand, the bestselling cookbook author, 31, is cutting back on the booze, and going public with her new lifestyle

“I was, point blank, just drinking too much,” she told Cosmopolitan magazine.

The star – married to singer John Legend, 38 – described herself as someone who “can’t have just one drink”, explaining that alcohol abuse runs in her family.

The booze mea culpa is Teigen’s latest revelation about her health, and the newest boost to her increasing reputation as the closest thing showbiz has to an open book.

In March, she revealed she takes medication after developing postnatal depression and anxiety after her daughter Luna was born last April.

“I felt selfish, icky and weird saying aloud that I’m struggling. Sometimes I still do,” the Lip Sync Battle co-host told Glamour magazine.

“I know I might sound like a whiny, entitled girl. I’m speaking up now because I want people to know it can happen to anybody.”

Part of her alcohol problem, she said, is that her Hollywood lifestyle means “everything is there, always. I don’t know how to go to an awards show and not drink”.

She started just having a glass of wine while she was in hair and makeup.

“Then that glass of wine would carry over into me having one before the awards show. And then a bunch at the awards show,” said Teigen.

“And then I felt bad for making kind of an ass of myself to people that I really respected. And that feeling, there’s just nothing like that.”

She felt “horrible,” she said. “It’s not a good look for me, for John, for anybody.”

Nobody brought up the subject of her drinking with Teigen, but “I knew in my heart it wasn’t right,” she said.

“It makes you very short with people. People think it’s cutesy and fun to go on these boozy brunches, but there’s more to it. I’ve never once been like, ‘I’m sure glad I had that boozy brunch!'”

Another reason to cut back? With the medication she’s taking for her mental health issues, “alcohol is like the least thing that helps”.

The trigger for Teigen’s new cleaner living was a holiday she, Legend and Luna took to a wellness retreat in Bali to regroup after a getaway to Italy.

The Bali trip was alcohol-free, and was “really, really wonderful,” she said.

“I would wake up feeling amazing. My skin felt amazing. I was just so happy.”

Now that she’s preparing for another “super hard” round of IVF treatments, Teigen is toying with going completely dry.

“I used to think it was kind of nutty to have to go totally sober, but now I get it,” she told Cosmopolitan.

“I don’t want to be that person … I have to fix myself.”
