Australia’s latest food sensation: the hamdog

The Australian sensation of combining foods has witnessed another evolution.
Forget the cheeseburger-pie and the cronut, meet the hamdog – the half-hotdog/half-hamburger wrapped in a single, super-modified bun.
The creator, Mark Murray, originally pitched the idea to potential investors on Channel Ten’s entrepreneur show Shark Tank last year.
He described the dish as a “party in your mouth”, but the idea was rejected for funding by the judges.
However, one year later he is now selling the $8 HamDog in Western Australia after successfully securing a US patent for the bizarre crossover.
The creation splits a burger patty to allow a hotdog to be nestled in between.
The bun, custom-made in a Perth bakery, is then filled with lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese, mustard, tomato sauce and mayonnaise.
Murray’s hamdog is currently featuring at fairs and markets in WA, but is expected to head to New South Wales in the coming months.
“It’s a pretty serious world we live in and this [the hamdog] just brings a bit of fun to it and everyone who sees it loves it,” Murray told 6PR radio.
The combination was originally conceived in 2004.
