Here are the best cheeses in your supermarket

If supermarket cheese fridges intimidate you with their variety, fancy names and strong aromas, there is a more simple answer to your palate’s prayers.

The 2016 Australian Grand Dairy Award winners have been announced and luckily for shoppers a lot of the best bites can be found in the big supermarkets.

But if you want to search for yourselves, then what should you look for?

There are a couple of simple rules to know, RMIT University cheese expert Dr Frank Sherkat told The New Daily, especially for brie and blue cheese.

“It should be nice and firm on the inside and not oozy,” Dr Sherkat said. “But more importantly from outside it should have a nice and velvety white coat.”

He said for blue cheese, shoppers should search for a consistent and fresh spread of green and blue mould on the inside of the cheese.

“I usually buy my cheese from the supermarkets but also the markets, they’re great places to go too,” Dr Sherkat said.

“There has been a big jump over the last decade or two in the types of cheeses you can buy in supermarkets.”

Here’s what the judges had to say about each of the winning cheeses:

Floridia Ricotta

Available at: Woolworths and Coles

How it tastes: Surrender to the light and almost fluffy texture of this ricotta and enjoy its milky, sweet flavors.

It’s no wonder this cheese is a multi-Australian Grand Dairy Award winner.

Flinders Estate Ash Brie

How it tastes: A ripe, gooey texture and a fine rind makes this cheese a great example of the white mould style and the centre ash line gives an unusual visual edge.

This creamy blue provides a lingering richness that both blue cheese beginners and connoisseurs will love.
