Australians bought 1,113,224 new cars last year, with a host of small cars seeing enduring popularity amongst local buyers.

But when it came to making the big decision, which manufacturer and model did Aussies favour?

The worst kind of drivers of the road – are you one of them?

According to figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, 2014 was the year of the Toyota Corolla, with 43,735 Australians purchasing the compact car.

This was followed closely by the Mazda3, which sold 43,313 units.

Toyota also managed to score the majority share in the Australia market, accounting for 18.3 per cent of total sales.

Meanwhile, New South Wales was the top state for car sales, buying a total of 356,174 cars.
