Coles, Woolies or Aldi: Which budget-friendly Christmas mince pie is the best?
Here at The New Daily, we love getting into the Christmas spirit, so that’s why we decided to put a holiday staple to the test.
It meant we sent our multimedia editor Zara Falkiner-Rose and reporter Parker McKenzie to try Aldi, Woolworths and Coles mince pies and find which one would take the mantle as the best.
The results are in, and it’s clear that it’s down to a matter of personal taste, even for someone who has never tried them before.
Price wise, all three offerings came in a similar ballpark, but Aldi’s was the cheapest.
Amazingly, none of the three home-brand products are from Australia, with all being made in New Zealand.
The humble mince pie contains a mixture of fruit, spices and suet, and their origin can be traced back to the 13th century when crusaders brought Middle Eastern recipes and spices back to Europe.
Originally made with minced meat — hence the name — that part of the tradition hasn’t survived into the modern day, but it remains a popular Christmas treat throughout the world.
