Holden’s iconic panel van is back forty years after it first went into production, but does the car have a place among today’s European imports and oversized four-wheel drives?

The new Sandman is actually more of a replica of Holden’s current Commodore, but includes detailing such as stickers and orange shag pile seats.

The car will be produced ahead of Holden’s withdrawal from local production in 2017.

According to News Corp, the new model will be unveiled next week to coincide with the Rip Curl Pro surfing competition at Bells Beach.

Only 250 Holden Sandman cars will be made.

The original Sandman was available between 1974 and 1979, and was produced as both a ute and panel van.

Holden spokesman Sean Poppitt told News Corp the reinvented Sandman was a “celebration of the Aussie way of life”.

Depending on who you ask, the new model is definitely an improvement on the original, with 20-inch rims, and a touchscreen dash.
