A remote isand in southern Japan has become a holiday hotspot due to its unusually large feline population.

Aoshima, a 1.6km-long island off the Japanese coast, is home to more than 120 cats and only 20 humans, earning it the nickname “Cat Island”.

According to the ABC, the cats were first introduced 380 years ago to combat a mice problem in the small fishing village.

Their numbers got out of hand around a decade ago, when a declining human population failed to manage the cats’ breeding habits.

Today, boatloads of Japanese tourists visit Aoshima to relish in a real-life Hello Kitty experience.
