The results are in. Australia’s best autumn town has been decided.

Across three days, thousands of people voted in The New Daily’s poll to decide which Australian town does autumn the best.

And it was an emphatic result, with more than a quarter of readers voting for Bright as the nation’s best autumn town.

Bright is renowned for putting on a magnificent show of colour this time of year – so much so that they hold a 10-day festival to celebrate the season.

Mayor Ron Janas said the unique natural environment draws people from across the country.

“It’s obviously the trees, the autumn colours that we have with deciduous trees. The leaves just fall so beautifully,” he said. “We’ve planted specific species over the years that all complement the natural environment.

“With the backdrop of the rivers and mountains, it gives off a magnificent display.”

Nestled in the Victorian high country, the gold-rush era town is home to just over 2400 people, and its identity is linked strongly with the surrounding landscape, Mr Janas said.

“We almost shed a tear if we have to take a mature tree down because they’re such a valuable part of our natural environment.

“We try to plan ahead to the future, all living things die, so we have plans to replace as required for the future generations.”

In second place was Orange, NSW.

About three hours drive from Sydney, Orange is filled with greenery. And that’s not changing any time soon – as the council adds around 300 trees to the town each year.

Aptly nicknamed “Australia’s colour city”, visitors can watch the leaves fall from fiery maple trees and take a wander through the rows of red and gold apple trees.

In the third spot, was Daylesford, Victoria.

Just over an hour north of Melbourne, the quaint town puts on a vibrant display of autumn colours during the season.

The jewels in the town’s autumn crown are Lake Daylesford and the nearby Hepburn Springs Mineral Reserve, which both have a host of deciduous plantings.
