Jeep owners have been urged to park their cars outside as millions of vehicles are recalled over fire fears.

Stellantis in the US advised that 1.3 million Jeep Wrangler SUVs and Jeep Gladiator trucks from 2021 to 2025 were affected worldwide.

It followed a string of fires caused by an electrical fault, which could happen even when the car was switched off.

Stellantis said the fault related to an electrical connection issue in the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring.

This problem could cause combustible materials in the vehicle to overheat, potentially leading to a fire.

The company was aware of reports of at least 72 fires and one injury that may be linked to the issue.

Owners were being advised to park their Jeeps outside and away from structures or other vehicles until ‌theirs was fixed.

The recall includes nearly 1.08 million vehicles in the United States, 106,000 in Canada, 23,000 in Mexico and about 125,000 in other markets around the world, Stellantis said.

However, it was unclear on Thursday (AEST) whether Australian owners were impacted.

More than 5,300 Wranglers and 4,300 Gladiators were sold in Australia between 2021 and 2025.

Reuters reports that in 2023 and early 2024 Stellantis investigated fires in some Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles but closed the investigation due to the low rate of fires.

In August 2024, it re-opened the investigation after receiving an increase in incidents originating at the suspect electrical connection.

Reuters reports that Stellantis said it had spent a year trying to determine the cause, including CT scans and X-rays, material analysis, investigating vehicle design and other testing.

In May, the company determined the issue posed an unreasonable risk to safety, Reuters reported.
