A product safety alarm has been issued for two popular smartwatch ranges amid fears overheating batteries could burn their wearers.
The consumer watchdog has issued the recall for the Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa 3.
The affected models were sold online and in-store by major retailers, including Big W, Officeworks, Myer, Catch of the Day and The Iconic, from August 1, 2020-September 20, 2023.
“The battery may overheat [and] could pose a risk of burns to a user,” the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said in its official recall notice on Tuesday.
“A firmware update was rolled out to affected Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa 3 devices, which Fitbit considers mitigates the risk of the battery overheating in those devices.”
Owners do not need to return the affected products for the firmware update to apply. The ACCC said the new battery management system would be activated on the affected models.
Once the update has been remotely installed, people can continue using their devices as normal.
But buyers could also be eligible for a “appeasement” payment of $80 from Fitbit.
The affected models are the Fitbit Sense: FB512 and Fitbit Versa 3: FB511.
Wearers can submit an online request here to find out if their device has been affected.
