Two popular sunscreens sold across Australia have been recalled, amid fears they may expose users to dangerous UV rays.

Bondi Sands issued the recall for two of its Australian-made products on Wednesday, backed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

“When you apply sunscreen, the ingredients inside the medicine help to protect your skin from damage caused by ultraviolet rays from the sun,” the TGA said.

“Sun Protection Factor lets you know how well the sunscreen will protect you from the sun. Since UV rays can cause skin cancer, the protection offered by sunscreen is very important.

“The affected batches of Bondi Sands Mineral Zinc Sunscreen SPF50+ is splitting into layers, meaning the ingredients are no longer properly mixed. When this happens, the SPF of the medicine changes and may not offer any protection at all.”

The affected products are Bondi Sands’ 60-milligram Mineral Zinc Sunscreen SPF 50+ Face Lotion (batch number 98182) and 120-milligram Mineral Zinc Sunscreen SPF 50+ Body Lotion (batch number 98181).

“No other batches of Mineral Zinc Sunscreen 50+ are affected by this recall,” Bondi Sands said.

Batch numbers can be found on the back of the sunscreen bottles and tubes, near the expiry date.

“Aside from the above mentioned batches, our remaining Mineral Zinc Sunscreen SPF 50+products are safe for consumer use,” the company said.

Anyone who has one of the affected products can return it to where they bought it for a full refund. More information is available from Bondi Sands or the TGA.
