Two varieties of one of Australia’s most popular yoghurt brands have been recalled, amid fears they are contaminated with E. coli.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand said Jalna Dairy Foods was recalling its one-kilogram tubs of Lactose Free Vanilla and Jalna Sweet & Creamy Greek Coconut.

”The products has been available for sale in major supermarkets nationally, including Coles, IGA, Woolworths and independent grocery stores,” FSANZ said on Monday.

The affected Lactose Free Vanilla tubs have a use-by day of July 28, while the coconut range has a use-by date of August 2. Both varieties were made in Australia.

FSANZ said the recall was due to fears both yoghurt ranges had been contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

E. coli is a bacteria that can be found in the gut of people, as well as many animals. Most are harmless, but some can cause illnesses, including gastro and other rarer, and more serious, conditions.

“Anyone can get infected with pathogenic E. coli but young children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems (e.g. cancer patients) are more likely to get seriously ill,” FSANZ said.

Anyone who has the affected product should return it to where they bought it for a full refund. FSANZ advised anyone who was worried about their health to seek medical advice.
