Beyonce and husband Jay-Z showed off photos of themselves cradling very cute twin babies as they kicked off their On the Run Tour II on Wednesday in Wales.

The “family” portrait was flashed on a big screen in a video with inspirational messages projected between the two images.

“Love is universal” said one. “Love never changes” said another.

Excited concert goers uploaded snapshots and social media went into an OMG spin. Fans assumed it was only the second glimpse of Beyonce and Jay-Z’s twins, daughter Rumi and son Sir Carter, since their birth nearly a year ago.

Even the famed Bey Legion Account, a Twitter fan page, featured the adorable images.

“The twins. Gemini legends,” one account wrote. Another tweeted: “Rumi and Sir Carter debut on #OTRII!”

But shortly after the outpouring of love, it was revealed the babies in the clip are apparently stunt doubles.

Entertainment website BuzzFeed contacted Beyonce’s representative to confirm the star was holding her own children, who will celebrate their first birthday on June 13.

A surprise response came back: “It’s not.”

BuzzFeed reported: “It looks like it was a false alarm, Bey Hive.”

Fans and media were baffled. Where the babies merely a creative prop? What was the point of the high-powered pair using babies who aren’t theirs? And who are the children?

The star couple didn’t respond immediately on the issue of the baby mystery when BuzzFeed sought clarification.

Beyonce, 36, has a history of making her 115 million followers lose it with twin-related photos.

She announced her pregnancy with Rumi and Sir last February on Instagram, sharing a photo of herself with belly on display in front of a floral background.

The photo broke the world record for being the most liked image at the time.

Then a month after the babies, the proud new mother posted photos with a similar lush theme of herself cradling a twin in each arm.

The youngest Carters and big sister Blue Ivy, 6, are reportedly on tour with their parents, which is “the best choice for the family”, a source said.

While the twins haven’t been seen for 11 months, Jay Z, 48, spoke about them in a January interview with CNN.

“We are in a beautiful time now because they are 7 months and they can’t move.

“They can just coo … they just coo and you don’t have to, ‘Wait, wait, wait, wait.’ ”

He added, “You know, they’re not running anywhere yet. We are going to enjoy these couple of months until they start running, and then it’s over.”

Aside from the fake twins baby mystery, the rest of the opening night’s two-and-a-half hour show was memorable for the displays of affection between Beyonce and Jay Z, according to reports.

“Endless love,” read a graphic on the screen. Jay-Z’s pendant was also on message: “Bling for love.”

The BBC said that as the couple “raced” through more than 40 hits, they “flirted, teased and held hands – not just when the spotlights were on, but deep in the shadows, between the songs”.

At one point, claimed the broadcaster, Beyonce “sidled” up to Jay-Z and made him laugh by twerking. Then when he rapped about “the rock on your finger” in Upgrade U, she flashed her wedding ring “and a big goofy grin spread across her face”.
