Sir Elton John says he is “in shock” following the death of his mother Sheila Farebrother, just months after their reconciliation.

The British singer announced that Sheila Farebrother had died aged 90 on Monday, posting a picture of them together on Instagram.

“So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning. I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock,” John wrote.

“Travel safe Mum. Thank-you for everything. I will miss you so much. Love, Elton.”

John, 70, had recently rekindled his relationship with his mother in May, after almost nine years of not speaking to each other.

The singer’s brush with death that saw him put in intensive care with a bacterial infection reportedly put their jagged relationship into perspective.

In March 2015, Farebrother revealed her son asked her to cut two old friends, Bob Halley and John Reid out of her life but ended in a disastrous argument when she refused, The Daily Mail reported.

Halley had worked as John’s personal assistant and driver for three decades, while Reid had been the singer’s manager before they too fell out.

“I told him: ‘I’m not about to do that and drop them,” she said at the time.

“Then to my utter amazement, he told me he hated me. And he then banged the phone down. Imagine! To me, his mother!”

The pair had not spoken since June 2008.

At her 90th birthday Farebrother hired an Elton John tribute act to perform.

Prompted by the milestone birthday, John got in touch with his mother for the first time in years, sending her white orchids.
